I will now look in greater detail at six different genres to help decide which genre that I am going to select for my magazine. I will focus on what type of music each genre entails, specific artists that make music from the genre, popular magazines within the genre. Finally, I will summarise whom the primary target audience for each genre.

Rock

Rock music  originated as "rock and roll" in the United States in the 1950s which later, in the 1960's, developed into different styles, this particularly happened in England and America.  Rock music itself is heavily influenced by rhythm and blues, also country music. Rock music also drew strongly on a number of other genres such as blues and folk, and incorporated influences from jazz, classical.  Musically, rock has centered on the electric guitar, usually in a band, accompanied with a drum and bass guitar. Typically, rock is song-based music usually with a 4/4 time signature utilizing a verse-chorus form, but the genre has become extremely diverse and common musical characteristics are difficult to define. Like most other genres, lyrically rock music takes shape from, love, social and political goings on. Rock music became dominated by white, male musicians and this is said to have shaped rock music.  Rock places a higher degree of emphasis on musicianship, live performance, and an ideology of authenticity than pop music. Since rock music took shape there has been many great bands originate, most notably: - Led Zeppelin, The Beatles, Metallica, Queen and Pink Floyd. The most popular magazines that promote the work of these artists are, Kerrang, NME, Classic Rock and Rock Sound magazine.

Pop

Pop music is a term that originally derives from an abbreviation of "popular"is a genre of popular music which originated in its modern form in the 1950s, deriving from rock and roll. The terms popular music and pop music are often used interchangeably, even though the former is a description of music which is popular and can include any style. Pop music has been dominated by the American and  British music industries, whose influence has made pop music something of an international monoculture, but most regions and countries have their own form of pop music, sometimes producing local versions of wider trends, and lending them local characteristics. Some of these trends have had a significant impact of the development of the genre. There are lots of artists and bands that come in to the pop genre. These include, One Direction, Rihanna, Micheal Jackson and Madonna. Media products that represent pop artists and the genre itself are, Top of the Pops, and Billboard.

Indie

Independent music or indie music is music produced independently from major commercial record labels or their subsidiaries, a process that may include an autonomous, do-it-yourself approach to recording and publishing. The term indie is sometimes also used to describe a genre; as a genre term, "indie" includes music that is not independently produced, and most independent music artists do not fall into a single, defined musical style or genre and usually create music that can be categorized into other genres. Bands and artists that fall into the indie category are, The Kooks, The wombats and Ed Sheeran. From a media point of view magazines that are indie specific are The Wire and NME.
