An institution is either a company or corporation, which sells products to
make a profit. This product can be anything, but as I am creating a magazine I
will look at magazine institutions. An institution is either a company or
corporation, which sells products to make a profit. This product can be
anything but as I am creating a magazine I will be looking at magazine
institutions.
The magazine publishing
institutions are forever diversifying by lots of different platforms such as
social media, mobiles, and online and live events. By doing this, the
institutions satisfy the consumer's needs in the ways they desire to find the
information. Magazine publishing institutions are also constantly expanding as
they are buying independent magazines. By doing this it increases the
profit margin for the institution as the independent magazine will be shown to
a greater audience and more copies will be bought. The publishing institutions
are normally a variety of independent magazines owned by larger publishing
firms, which are then owned by some of the largest institutions in the UK. This
means that the correct audiences can be reached at a larger scale.
Many publishing companies have
an advantage over people trying to independently set up magazines. Publishing
companies worth millions will have access to state of the art equipment. Not
only this, but companies with such riches will be able to attract staff to work
with their state of the art equipment for each specific department. Another
advantage that large publishing companies will have over others is a
reputation. Some members of the public and customers will buy items based
purely on the publisher. Publishers that are renowned for creating high end and
successful magazines are likely to carry on creating magazines like this. An
example of a large publishing company like this is The Daily Mail and General
Trust. This publishing company is the largest of its kind in Europe and owns
the Daily Mail, The Mail on Sunday, Ireland on Sunday, Mail Today and Metro.
IPC Media is the UK's largest
consumer magazine publisher, with an audience of 26 million UK adults.
Two-thirds of these are women and 42% are men.
IPC have 25 million users
worldwide each month and are split into three publishing divisions. One of
these is IPC Connect, which is the division my audience fit into.
IPC connect is aimed at an
audience of women, which provides digital media and print in areas of fashion,
celebrity, lifestyle, entertainment and television. It reaches a 9.4
million mass market of women every month and is approximately 49% of all mass-market
women. IPC Connect publishes magazines such as ‘World Soccer’ so I wouldn’t ask
IPC to produce my magazine as they already publish a magazine that I would want
to be rivaling. However, I could possibly choose IPC to publish my magazine as
their current football magazine has a very wide target audience and is about
world football so my magazine would perhaps be able to bring something new to
their company, as it would be a regional magazine as opposed to a global
magazine.
BBC Magazines is the publishing
division of the BBC Worldwide. It has recently been part of Immediate
Media Company, which is the third largest UK magazine publisher. They have
over one million active subscribers and have 58magazines and 36 websites. 70
million magazines are also sold every year. BBC publishes ‘Match Of The Day’
which is magazine that is specifically about world football, particularly
English football. This magazine is a spin off from the BBC TV show ‘Match Of
The Day’ so it would be very difficult for me to find a space for my magazine
at BBC as they all ready publish such a successful magazine in the genre that I
wish produce a magazine for thus meaning I would want to rival this magazine.
Bauer Media Group is a
multinational media company and is based in Germany/ They sell 38 million
magazines in a week worldwide and has over 300 magazines in 15 different
countries. Bauer also offers radio stations, television channels and online.
Bauer Media already publish
‘Match!’ magazine, which is a magazine that is about world football and is very
successful in this genre. Although I would be asking them to publish a magazine
of the same genre as ‘Match!’ my magazine has a regional slant and is
specifically directed to football in one region so there may be space in the
market for Bauer Media to publish my magazine.
My product is going to be a
regional magazine about football. Prior to creating my magazine I thought
it was best to look at other magazines that would be rivaling my magazine, not
only to see what I would be up against but also to gain inspiration from my
competitors. As Bentley said in 1997, the creative process is; “the
rearranging of the old to create the new.” This theory is basically saying that
consumers need to be able to recognize and relate to my product so it must
follow conventions seen on other magazines in the relevant genre. This reason I
chose not to ask DGMT to publish my magazine. The reason I have decided not too
go to this publishing company is because they are starting to monopolized the
regional genre. Cornwall Today is one of their main products, which I am going
to look at rivaling. Cornwall Today is a magazine that is very successful
in Cornwall as it includes news and information about events and things going
on in the area. This is not only good for local people, but holidaymakers and
people that own second homes in Cornwall might buy the magazine too. As
you can see from their media pack 92% of readers pass on their copy of Cornwall
Today to family and friends or keep for reference. This shows that the content
of this magazine is very good and the fact that people pass it on mean that the
popularity of the magazine will grow, as more people are enjoying/finding out
about it. In terms of figures, Cornwall Today has around 34,000 readers per
issue, distribution to over 400 outlets including retail, exclusive Cornish
hotels and major tourists attractions. Not only this, but the magazine has
2,970 followers on Facebook and 13,600 followers on Twitter this shows that the
magazine is targeting an extremely large target audience. Although these facts
and figures show that in order to rival this product I am going to have to out
in lots of hard work and produce something of real quality I think it is
possible. The main way I think I can rival this regional magazine is because
Cornwall Today is read by 80% female and 20% male. My product will
predominantly target males and this will enable my product to rival Cornwall Today.
